Position Overview:

The Scientific Informatics group at Helicos supports the following activities:

• Collaborates with external scientists in proof-of-principle studies to demonstrate novel and innovative uses of the HeliScope single-molecule sequencing platform.


• Prototype development of new methods for the analysis of next-generation sequence data


• Design, implementation, documentation and support of the HeliSphere open source bioinformatics software package for analysis for HeliScope data.


• Assistance with internal data mining efforts to support platform improvement.

The group consists of a mixture of biologists, computer scientists, and mathematicians. This multidisciplinary environment reflects the larger Helicos culture.  Teamwork, responsibility, and the desire to create high quality scientific solutions are critical for success in the group.  This is a technical position and the candidate will be expected to write applications and develop tools for analysis of DNA sequencing based applications.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Data mining, statistical analysis and novel analysis method development for next-generation sequencing data


• Prototype and production software development (primarily LINUX/Python)


• Evaluation of external next-generation sequencing data analysis tools for applicability to Helicos data.


• Collaborate with existing and potential customers to help them understand how best to utilize the capabilities of the HeliScope and the HeliSphere software to answer their scientific questions.


• Collaborate with internal instrument and method development groups.
